Charlize Theron pitching modern Hatfields & McCoys TV series to ABC

Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron is hoping to take advantage of the sudden popularity of the Hatfield and McCoy family feud. The Snow White and the Huntsman star is reportedly shopping around an idea for a modern take on the original feud, which began in the 1860s.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Theron is pitching the idea under her overall deal with ABC Studios. Theron, who is only attached to produce the series, will develop the show under her Denver and Delilah Productions banner with producers Dawn Olmstead (Prison Break) and Beau Flynn (Journey to the Center of the Earth). THR reports that they have pitched the project to ABC and have a follow-up meeting set for next week.

AceShowBiz reports that Eagle Eye writer John Glenn has been picked to write the pilot script. Last year, Glenn actually developed a pilot called Identity for ABC, but the network passed on it.

The news follows the History Channels surprising success with its Hatfields & McCoys miniseries, which broke records this week. The premiere episode on Memorial Day drew 13.9 million viewers, setting the record as the most-watched non-sports program on ad-supported cable. While Tuesdays episode slipped to 13.1 million viewers, Wednesdays finale drew 14.3 million, breaking the record set on Monday.

As for Theron, she has been increasingly busy this summer, with both Snow White, which opened on Friday, and Prometheus, which opens on June 8, hitting theaters. Her Denver and Delilah company has also been busy, having producers her 2011 film, Young Adult. The banner also co-produced 2003s ! Mons ter, which earned Theron the Best Actress Oscar. The banner is also co-producing Mind Hunter with director David Fincher for HBO.

In April, Universal picked up her Agent 13 project, which will also be produced by Denver and Delilah.
