Charlize Theron's disaster date

Charlize Theron has vowed never to go on a blind date again - after her own nightmare experience.

The Oscar-winning South African actress - who is currently starring in Prometheus and Snow White And The Huntsman - told US talk show host Conan O'Brien about the time when she was auctioned off on a blind date for charity.

She decided to fulfil her promise and "go to dinner with this strange man", but "made two girlfriends sit at the restaurant" nearby because she didn't feel comfortable with the idea, US Weekly reports.

"The closer I got, I thought: 'This could actually turn out really bad'. Rich people can be creeps, too!" she said.

Charlize, who is mother to six-month-old son Jackson, admitted the experience has put her off future encounters of the blind kind.

"Look, I would rather just give the money [to charity]. It was a scary thing. And he was weird!" she recalled, adding she never saw him again.

The 36-year-old, who has not been in a serious relationship since she split with Irish actor Stuart Townsend in 2010, warned about accepting such invites.

"Do not do it. It's like the worst idea ever," she advised.

"They trick you with the 'People are suffering' thing. They trick you with the 'You can help so many people,' and you fall for it. And before you know it, you're at a restaurant with some stranger. Like, you could end up in [serial killer] Jeffrey Dahmer's apartment that way! That's not a good idea."
