White House correspondents dinner: Charlize Theron, Rashida Jones, Daniel Dae Kim spotted
The White House Correspondents Association Dinner weekend officially began Friday night with a flurry of news media-hosted parties that featured major stars of film and television knocking back drinks and darting through crowds to access cordoned-off VIP lounges.
Official sign that the wonky cocktail-apalooza has begun? Ann Perkins of Parks and Recreation aka Rashida Jones, whom I spotted only in quick passing at Fridays Time/People magazine cocktail reception, where the bold-facers mingled freely among the mere mortals tweeted the following photo from the top of the W hotel, where the New Yorkers reception was held.
Jones was joined at the Time/People festivities by Jesse Tyler Ferguson of Modern Family, who hopped from that reception to the New Yorker party to the late-night fete co-sponsored by the Atlantic Media, Funny or Die and the Impact Film Fund. He politely demurred when I tried to ask him a few questions at the Time reception, but seemed grateful when I complimented his just-perfect-for-Washington plaid bow tie. Greta Van Susteren attended the Time/People reception but minus invited guest Lindsay Lohan , who had to hop a later flight to D.C. after missing her originally scheduled 1 p.m. travel time. So did Daniel Dae Kim, who chatted for a few moments (more on that momentarily).
Later, at the Funny or Die/Atlantic/Impact Film Fund event, the statuesque Charlize Theron, dressed in a casual jacket and skinny jeans, chatted with Rosario Dawson in a roped-off area for VIPs while regular people stood outside the velvet barriers, gawking at the two women as if they were long-legged, uber-attractive mammals in some sort of celebrity zoo (which, frankly, they were.)

As I was exiting that party, a coach pulled up and deposited several White House Correspondents weekend regulars Chace Crawford, Glees Matthew Morrison and actor Joe Mazzello, all of whom are repped by the same manager, Eric Podwall outside the party location at 18th and L Sts. NW. Crawford paused ! long eno ugh to take a photo with a fan and sign one autograph, but then the Podwall posse zipped inside.
Fortunately, one can always count on Jin from Lost to pause and talk, which is what Daniel Dae Kim did earlier in the evening, back at the Time/People reception.
The current Hawaii Five-O star, who said the CBS series just wrapped production on its second season Thursday night, said hes spending his hiatus on some non-entertainment-related business.
Im doing some work for the government, he said. Im a cultural envoy for the Department of State for the World Expo in Asia this summer. Its the first time Ive ever done that kind of work for the government in an official capacity.
When I inevitably brought the conversation back to Lost, Kim said he stills keeps in touch with several of his Oceanic 815 colleagues, including Josh Holloway, Harold Perrineau, Dominic Monaghan, Ian Cusick and new mom/Hobbit archer Evangeline Lilly.
Im big fans of all of theirs, he said. If theres any chance that we could work together [again], I would love it.
Perhaps he could bring some of them with him if and when he attends next years Correspondents Dinner. Based on Kims answer to the question, Why did you come to D.C.s nerd prom a second time?, it sounds like hed be up for a third trip.
A lot of the country is fascinated by Hollywood and show business, he said. But I happen to be fascinated with the people who make things happen in real life. Being able to meet the policymakers and the people who make change in this country is, I think, really worthwhile.
