Did Charlize Theron and Stuart Townsend Break Up Over Babies?

Charlize Theron joined a bevy of celebrity women on Wednesday when she announced the adoption of a baby boy as a single woman.

"Charlize Theron has adopted a child. She is the proud mom of a healthy baby boy named Jackson," her rep confirmed.

The move was a surprise to many fans of the "Snow White and the Huntsman" star, though she's talked about her desire for children for years. "I do want to have kids, yeah," she told Vogue in a recent interview. "I always have. I've never had a rush for it, a moment where I really wanted to do it. I don't have a panic about it."

Apparently, that panic set in and she was willing to do it on her own, despite her new single stature. The "Young Adult" actress dated actor Stuart Townsend for 10 years before they split in 2010. The couple both agreed that they weren't interested in getting married, but it's possible that he didn't want to have kids.

"Kids? I don't know," he said in an interview before their breakup. " If it happened tomorrow, I'd be delighted and if it doesn't happen tomorrow, I'm fine with that."

Of course, it's also entirely possible that Theron decided she wanted to adopt after they broke up.

The "Queen of the Damned" actor has kept a low profile since splitting with the high-profile Theron. He was spotted kissing a mystery woman soon after his breakup with the actress, though nothing much was publ! icized a bout it. It looks like he's been pouring himself into work on television shows like "Robot Chicken" and the upcoming feature film "A Stranger in Paradise."

Will she ever get back together with Townsend? It doesn't sound like it'll happen, though a spy said she regretted leaving the actor.

"She and Stuart are still the best of friends and even though Charlize is hinting at giving things a second chance between them, Stuart has made a point of moving on, a source told ShowBiz Spy in May 2010, adding that she took him on a vacation to woo him back. It didn't work.

"He's seeing someone else and enjoying his newfound freedom."

Will Theron stay a single mom? Doubtful - if Townsend isn't down to be a dad, we're sure there are hundreds of other guys willing to step up to the plate in order to be with the leggy beauty. For now, she's getting help from someone who knows how to raise a child.

"Charlize's mom [Gerda] has been helping out with the baby," a Theron source told People . "She seems so happy and will be a great mom."
