Trailer Tracker: Charlize Theron gets bad

Charlize Theron is a beautiful actress who isnt afraid to appear ugly. She won a best-actress Oscar for 2003s Monster, where she added pounds and prosthetics to play serial killer Aileen Wuornos. She was also plainly good in 2007s In the Valley of Elah.

In her next two films, Theron gets to keep her good looks but uses them to hide a dark agenda, putting the pretty in pretty evil.

The best example of this dichotomy is Snow White and the Huntsman, which opens next June. On the one hand, her character goes by the name The Evil Queen, so its pretty clear which way her moral compass is pointing.

On the other hand, she asks her magic mirror to tell her who is the fairest of them all and learns that its her. Of course, magic mirrors are notorious for answering questions and then clearing their throats and adding: Um, except

Snow White and the Huntsman looks like an altogether dark movie. The trailer shows knights shattering into shards of glass (was it very cold when they were fighting?) and crows shattering into smaller crows. The Evil Queen also seems able to do this trick.

Twilights Kristin Stewart plays Snow White, while Chris Hemsworth trades Thors hammer for a pair of axes to play the Huntsman.

(Incidentally, a newly released trailer for next years other Snow White picture shows it couldnt be any more different in tone. Mirror, Mirror, which stars Julia Roberts and Lily Collins, looks like its going for a Princess Bride vibe.)

Before the fairy tales begin, however, Theron stars in Young Adult, which opens in December. She plays Mavis Ga! ry, an a uthor who returns to her Minnesota hometown to pick up with an old boyfriend, Buddy Slade (Patrick Wilson).

Simple enough rom-com setup, except for one little problem Buddy is married and has a young child. But thats a minor concern when youre evil. How evil? Im pretty sure if you watch the trailer closely, it shows Mavis fixing her makeup with the help of a mirror a magic mirror.

Theron has another project coming up next year, although little is known about it yet. Its called Prometheus, it also stars Wilson, and its directed by Ridley Scott.

Rumour has it that Prometheus will be a science-fiction horror set in the same universe as Scotts classic 1979 film Alien. If thats the case, Wilson had better be careful not to turn his back on Therons character, unless he wants to find a parasitic extraterrestrial leaping from his rib cage. Theron seems to enjoy playing the baddie too much to want to stop any time soon.
