Charlize Theron's Unlikable 'Adult' Role

Much like her character in the new film "Young Adult," Charlize Theron is a stalker. While the film's Mavis goes after an old boyfriend, Theron has begun targeting interesting directors willing to see beyond her striking beauty. After having taken on challenging roles in the past only to have them disappoint in the execution, the 36-year-old actress now looks to work with visionaries at the helm of her films. She sought out Jason Reitman at last year's Academy Awards, where the writer-director had been nominated for his George Clooney-starring "Up in the Air," Theron's favorite film of 2009. "We were walking into the theater, and he and his wife were in front of us. I thought, 'Oh, God, don't be that person,' but I was. I tapped him on the shoulder and said, 'I just love your film,'" said Theron, whose shyness often prevents her from reaching out to those she admires. She adds, "The directors that I really suss out, the

The South African blond was on hand to accept a career achievement award on a night that saw honors for Brad Pitt's "Tree of Life," "Beginners" and actress Felicity Jones. The once-bullied Theron looked chic in a black-and-white frock, flanked by her "Young Adult" director Jason Reitman, costar Patton Oswalt and gorgeous mom Gerda. Cropped cuts needn't always look the same and all it takes to mix things up a bit is a skinny headband, a curling iron and maximum-hold hairspray. To begin, use a small or medium-barreled curling iron to create as much wave and bend as possible. Curl one and two-inch sections over the entire head and then backcomb thoroughly. Next, finger comb hair back, pulling it all away from the face and smoothing the top layer without diminishing volume. Then, spritz your 'do with a healthy dose of hairspray and pop on a cute headband. Ta-da! It's a whole new you! We've spotted other celebrities with a similar look, including Dannii Minoque, Milla Jovovich and Scarlett Johansson. Check out all the pictures in the Short Curls Lookbook . Video! Charlize Theron Talks 'Young Adult': 'It Felt So Wrong'

Oscar winner Charlize Theron is back on the big screen after three years, in a new dramedy called "Young Adult." Theron's character, Mavis Gary, returns to her hometown to win her ex-boyfriend back, despite the fact that he is married with kids. Theron said it was fun playing Mavis. "It felt so wrong. I felt like I was eating cake three times a day and no one was telling me I can't," the actress revealed. Theron continued, "I think that she is a character that surprises you, and that there is something endearing about her unattractive qualities." "Young Adult" hits theaters Dec. 16, and next summer the 36-year-old will tap into her evil side, as the Queen Ravenna in "Snow White and the Huntsman." Theron said the role was "the most ambitious" and that she felt like "a kid getting to play."

Actress Charlize Theron drew from an embarrassing past dating experience for a scene in her new romantic drama Young Adult after she was caught short with a stuffed bra. In the film, the Oscar winner portrays Mavis Gary, a lonely teen romance novelist who returns to her hometown to try and win back her now-married high school boyfriend. One clip sees Theron boost her bust with silicon cutlets for a date to disastrous effect - and she admits she's all too familiar with the routine. She tells Vogue magazine, "I was on this date and started making out, and it was moving a little further, so I realised I had to get the cutlets out. But my bag was small, and I couldn't fit them in the thing... I may have hid them in his trash with lots of toilet paper." But not everyone thought the movie scene was believable - until Theron came clean about her own dating dilemma to director Jason Reitman: "Jason was like, 'No way. That doesn't happen!' But that stuff happe

Charlize Theron relished nasty role

Charlize Theron says she really didn't mind playing a mean role in her latest film. The Hollywood star takes the lead role as "psychotic" Mavis Gray in Jason Reitman's new movie, Young Adult. "Being a b**** wasn't hard for me at all!", she told this month's Empire magazine. "Okay, I take it back - that's the stuff you dream of doing. "That's like getting to eat cake every day - especially having a director like Jason saying, 'Yeah, more of that!'." Charlize said the role, as a writer of teen literature who heads back to her hometown in a bid to win back her now-married high school boyfriend, made a change from previous films. "I'm so not a dark person, but I end up doing these movies that are horrific, and I swear to God I feel like producers in Hollywood are like, 'Oh, does she get raped and cry? Send it to Charlize!'," the Monster star said.

Charlize Theron Says 'Fury Road' Delays Nearly Kept Her Out Of 'Young Adult'

Image
If you're wondering where Charlize Theron has been since her brief role in 2009's " The Road ," well, you're not alone. We recently talked to the star about her forthcoming comedy-drama " Young Adult " and she filled us in on where, exactly, she's been. We wondered if this was a conscious choice or if she just hadn't found a role as juicy as the main character in "Young Adult" (she swills Diet Coke and passes out, face down, every night). It turns out that we maybe we were asking the wrong person. We should have talked to George Miller. "I was kind of getting ready to do a film," Theron told us. "' Fury Road ' for Warner Bros. with George Miller. And the film kept pushing. So in a lot of ways I was sitting around waiting to do that movie." Why has "Fury Road" been pushed so many times? Well, because of Mother Nature. Apparently there have been unseasonable rainstorms that have swept Australia, maki

Trailer Tracker: Charlize Theron gets bad

Chris Knight Nov 17, 2011 6:00 PM ET | Last Updated: Nov 17, 2011 5:09 PM ET Charlize Theron is a beautiful actress who isnt afraid to appear ugly. She won a best-actress Oscar for 2003s Monster , where she added pounds and prosthetics to play serial killer Aileen Wuornos. She was also plainly good in 2007s In the Valley of Elah . In her next two films, Theron gets to keep her good looks but uses them to hide a dark agenda, putting the pretty in pretty evil. The best example of this dichotomy is Snow White and the Huntsman , which opens next June. On the one hand, her character goes by the name The Evil Queen, so its pretty clear which way her moral compass is pointing. On the other hand, she asks her magic mirror to tell her who is the fairest of them all and learns that its her. Of course, magic mirrors are notorious for answering questions and then clearing their throats and adding: Um, except Snow White and the Huntsman looks like an altogether dark movie. The trailer shows kni

Julia Roberts Vs. Charlize Theron: Whos the Best Evil Queen?

Mirror, Mirror on the wall, who's the best villain of them all? Actually you just need to choose the best evil queen between Charlize Theron and Julia Roberts, which is a little tougher than it sounds. The teaser trailers for dueling Snow White movies " Snow White and the Huntsman " and " Mirror Mirror " were released just days apart, but there's already been tons of speculation about which movie will end up being better. However, Snow Whites Kristen Stewart and Lilly Collins don't seem to be the stars in either - the actresses really stealing scenes are the evil queens. But which sexy sorceress is better? Here's a comparison between the two based on what we've seen so far: Their Outfits The two evil queens certainly have a very different sense of style. Charlize wears gorgeous flowing gowns in gold and black and a crown with spikes that look like daggers. Her exquisite gothic outfits aren't unlike those worn by many women in medieval movies.

Charlize Theron says she's "never been single"

Charlize Theron may be an Oscar-winning actress, but there's one role she never prepared herself for: a mid-thirties single woman. In an interview for the December issue of Vogue, the Hollywood star reveals, "I've never been single. This is the first time in my life. From the time I was 19, I've been in relationships, literally gone from one to the other within a month." Theron split with her husband of nine years, Stuart Townsend, in January 2010, just months before she began working on her new film, Young Adult. Jason Reitman, Charlize Theron Sneak 'Young Adult' Narcissism

Image
Paramount has been sneaking screenings of “could be a black comedy, but then again could be an outright tragedy merely punctuated with moments of hilarity. The sneaks are probably a good idea, because this is not the kind of film that you just want to throw out there. It’s certainly darker than any of Reitman’s previous work, including the ingeniously misanthropic “Thank You For Smoking,” and as noted, it’s kind of hard to categorize. But it’s daring. The film, written by Diablo Cody (“Juno”), is the story of the narcissistic and needy Mavis Gary, played by Charlize Theron, who heads back to her small hometown of Mercury, Minn., to reclaim the heart of her high school flame (Patrick Wilson). Except: He’s happily married and a newly-minted father. Mavis doesn’t care, or even much notice. So basically Reitman invites you to hate his main character, and Theron plays the heartless, hollow Mavis without flinching. She drinks whiskey incessantly, and manages to make even hate crimes pale in

Charlize Theron reportedly fled from a hair salon recently when fellow actress Cameron Diaz arrived. The South African star was having her tresses tended to at the Byron & Tracey Salon in Beverly Hills on October 27, when she had a strange reaction to the Bad Teacher star entering the establishment. A witness told Star magazine that Charlize appeared “pretty panicked” when Alex Rodriguez’s ex-girlfriend walked in. “It sure seemed like Charlize was trying to not see or interact with Cameron,” the source said. “Charlize got flustered and told her hairstylist to wrap up quickly and to forget about blow-drying her hair.” The Oscar-winner then took off her smock and left the salon with her hair still wet. It has been suggested her hasty departure was an attempt to avoid coming face-to-face with Cameron. “It was weird for Charlize to act that way,” the source added. “It makes you wonder if they’ve had some sort of fight over a man.” Cameron, 39, was apparently unfazed by Charlize’s behav
