Charlize Theron's Side-Swept Marcel

Charlize Theron (Getty Images) Charlize Theron's ultra-romantic retro 'do is a lovely option for a formal event. We've seen Emma Stone wear a similar look along with a few other stars going for 1920s-inspired glam. The styling is loose and imprecise, making it fairly easy to duplicate.

To begin, make a deep side part and comb hair straight down on both sides. To make the subtle Marcel wave, you'll need a curling iron and a hard rubber comb. Start by clamping down vertically with the iron on hair near the scalp while taking the comb and laying the teeth directly on the scalp beneath the barrel of the iron. Keeping the comb's teeth in contact with the scalp, gently tug tresses away from the face to create a backwards 'c' formation.

The next step is to move the curling iron and comb down to where the 'c' ends. Repeat the process, only slide the comb forward to create a normal 'c'. Keep working your way down sections the width of the iron, making backward 'c', normal 'c', backward 'c'. Don't worry about making crisp waves, you'll want them to remain soft and slightly tousled-looking.

When you've waved all the hair, pull all the longer lengths into a ponytail behind one ear. Then, add a few spiral curls to the ends and twist, loop and pin them into place. To complete the look, mis! t with a generous amount of hairspray and add a slim headband.
